JESUS OUR GREAT PHYSICIAN

One day while driving down the highway a man was experiencing chest pains. He pulled over to the first doctor he could find. When he went in to see the doctor, he said, “Doctor, I hear these loud gurgling noises and I have sharp pains in my chest.” The man asked the doctor, “Doctor, will you take a look at my chest?” The doctor looked at his chest and said, “You are right, I hear a strange sound coming from your chest.” The man asked the doctor again, “Doctor, would you like for me to take a deep breath?” The doctor replied, “Yes, take a deep breath.” The man asked, “Would you like for me to breathe in and out?” The doctor replied, “Oh, that is a good idea. Breathe in and out.” The man asked the doctor, “Would you like me to take off my shirt so that you can do a full examination?” The doctor replied, “No, that won’t be necessary, just open your mouth and I will numb the pain.” “My mouth!” the man said while rubbing the sweat from his brow. The doctor replied, “Sir, I can help you, but I am a dentist, not a cardiologist.”

How many of us have been in so much pain, we wanted help, no matter where it came from. Many of us, I know, have symptoms, that appear only on the surface but they go much deeper than we realize. One of Jesus’ names is, The Great Physician. He is the only one who understands that our external symptoms are the result of much deeper internal problems. I have counseled people for over 35 years and discovered that what brought them to counseling were external circumstances they could not cope with as before. These were circumstances way beyond their control. They wanted me to teach them ways to cope and strategies to control their lives or the people surrounding their circumstances. They wanted a bandage to stop the bleeding. For many of my clients who were not Christians and who were not open to receiving Christ, as a licensed psycho-therapist, a bandage was what I was trained to offer them. They returned week after week for me to change the bandage. They paid me good money to wrap a new bandage around their souls to make it appear better. There were times when Jesus refused to bandage them again and offered them healing and wholeness or offered them the avenue by which they could get well. However, few wanted to pay the price for wholeness and health and continued on in their conditions. When Jesus no longer wanted to bandage up His beloved, He’d tell me, “We are done, see if they want to work on any other issue?” For believers who loved Jesus and did not want a bandage, the Lord met them in the room of their souls where they were hurting and showed them the path to freedom. Again, few believers were willing to go through the process of letting go, forgiving, and surrendering the issues they were trying to control to the Lord. Over the past 38 years walking with my Lord, He has healed and restored my soul of many dark and painful areas. He did not do it all at once; most of the time, little by little. There were times, I did not allow Him access and used my worldly strategies to cover them; that temporal fix never lasted very long. Jesus knows the areas of our souls that need the greatest healing and as we say yes to His scalpels, scissors, saws, and sutures, He gets to the root of our pain and restores our souls to the way He created it to be.

What does our Lord want to heal in your life? Rejection, depression, PTSD, anxiety, fear, headaches, heartaches, loneliness, and every mental and physical illness that causes anguish? If only you will let Him.  Sometimes He graces us to walk with our affliction and other times, He chooses to heal us. It’s up to Him because He is THE GREAT PHYSICIAN.

Prayer: Thank you my Jesus because you are The Great Physician. My soul is sick. Thank you, you came to restore my soul and body and to destroy the works of the evil one lurking within me. Amen
